λέξη→ λέ   ξη,    νερό→ νε   ρό   άλογο→ ά  λο  γο  προσέχω→ προ  σέ  χω


Being able to make syllables gives you two important abilities:
1.   You understand what many grammar rules are talking about because too many rules in grammar referring to changes that happen to the last 2-3 syllables.
2.   You are able to read correctly, especially when you know what δίψηφα φωνήεντα and δίφθογγοι are. This is a tricky thing in Greek language.
So, read about syllables, try to make syllables to some words as exercise.
No, do not focus too much on syllables, just keep in mind how they work, you will meet them all the time. They will be your keys to open doors in understanding reading and writing in Greek.
